The first load of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Corpus Christi, Texas to Spain arrived in the port of Ferrol at Reganosa’s plant via the Belgian ship Excalibur. The load belongs to Trafigura.
The LNG Corpus Christi plant, which began operating last December, consists of three large scale and seven smaller trains. It has three storage tanks and two berths. Requiring $15 billion investment, Cheniere, who owns the plant, estimates annual production at 23 million metric tons.
Reganosa’s plant received the first shipment of North American LNG into Spain and the second European importation in July 2016 from Sabine Pass, Louisiana.
The new route and this delivery demonstrate the viability of importing North American gas to European markets.
Cheniere estimates the United States will become the third greatest world supplier of LNG in 2020 with a production capacity of 60 million metric tons per year. Spain will be one of the largest importers of North American LNG.
