Damen is close to completion with Europe’s first vessel conversion from MGO to dual-fuel capabilities. Damen is set to deliver a turnkey package for Dragages-Ports’ Samuel de Champlain to convert the vessel from marine gasoil (MGO) to dual-fuel with MGO and liquid natural gas (LNG). Damen will handle procurement, engineering and support for the project. Samuel de Champlain is currently operating with diesel-electric, so Damen will adjust the generators to support dual-fuel and add LNG storage onboard.
Commercial Manager at Damen Shiprepair Dunkerque, Fabien Guillemot stated, “The success of this project is evidence for owners of ships operating in coastal waters and emission control areas that there is an alternative to scrapping old vessels and building a new one.” Guillemot’s comments come ahead of tightening emissions regulations.
In early 2019 Damen presented the technical aspects of the project to interested customers and businesses. They discussed challenges and insight into the conversion project.
