Italian shipowner Caronte & Tourist now has a new RoPax ferry in service, the Elio. The Elio was constructed at Turkey’s Sefine shipyard and will operate between mainland Italy and Messina. MAN Cryo supplied the LNG fuel supply system for the ferry’s three duel-fuel propulsion engines.
Overall, MAN Cryo supplied a heat-exchanger unit, a bunkering station, the freestanding control and shutdown system, a 150 m3 insulated type C fuel tank, and TCS with airlock, piping, valves, and vaporization gear.
At 133 meters long and 21.5 meters wide, the ferry can carry 290 cars 1,500 passengers while maintaining 18.5 knots.
According to Louise Andersson, the Head of MAN Cryo, “This project is of strategic importance since it is the very first RoPax vessel in the Mediterranean to operate on LNG. It follows MAN’s vision to become a leading supplier in the regions where we see a strong growth of demand for LNG solutions.” Leaders from Caronte & Tourist stated that MAN Cryo is their trusted partner for reliable fuel supply systems, while a Sefine Shipyard representative noted his satisfaction with MAN Cryo’s equipment and service on the project.
