Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) and Karpower International B.V., a subsidiary of Karadeniz, agreed to jointly execute Eastern and Southern Africa’s first ever LNG-to-Powership project. The project will be led by a shared entity, KARMOL.
Primarily, the project will be executed in Mozambique and will include the use of a floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) and a Powership©. The FSRU will be converted from an existing LNG vessel while the Powership© will be taken from its existing operation in Nacala once the FSRU is complete.
The project will begin with the FSRU providing regasified liquified natural gas to the Powership©. From there, the Powership© will generate electricity and that electricity will supply Mozambique’s National Power Utility, Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM), via the transmission site.
Once operational, the system will provide 120MW of stable, affordable power, supporting the country’s economic growth.
