Brittany Ferries recently celebrated the ceremonial launch of the newly built Galicia ferry. Another addition to Brittany Ferries’ fleet began construction while the 215-meter long Galicia launched from the VIC Weihai shipyard in Shandong, China.
The two sister ships will ultimately service routes between Portsmouth to Santander and Bilbao. The Galicia is planned to be operational by the end of 2020, followed by the Salamanca in 2022, then another sister ship called the Santoña in 2023. Once completed, these three carriers will add about three kilometers of cargo space to Brittany Ferries’ fleet.
Most notably, the Salamanca and the Santoña will run on liquified natural gas (LNG), allowing for less sulphur and particulate emissions.
At the ceremony, Brittany Ferries CEO said, “Our customers rightly expect our fleet to be modern, comfortable and efficient, with the promise of minimal environmental impact from operations and we can only achieve this aim with the very best, innovative new ships. Galicia and Salamanca are perfectly suited to our long-haul Spanish operations, and will allow us to further enhance our service to holidaymakers and hauliers taking advantage of these routes.”
