IndianOil’s Ennore LNG Terminal was dedicated to the nation by the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi. The occasion was marked by the reveal of a plaque and had several prominent figures from government and IndianOil in attendance.
The Ennore LNG facility, developed by IndianOil joint venture company, is the first LNG terminal on India’s southeast coast. The natural resources in Tamil Nadu has been previously untapped, but the new facility will now generate 5 million metric tons per annum (MMTPA) of liquified natural gas (LNG).
The Ennore facility will be linked to a pipeline to supply LNG to other areas. The 1244-kilometer-long pipeline will supply regasified liquified natural gas (RLNG) all the way to Ramnathpuram through Manali, Thiruvallur, Puducherry, Nagapattinam, Madurai, Trichy and Tuticorin with a separate pipeline connecting to Bengaluru.
While Tamil Nadu has very little infrastructure now, the Ennore facility is expected to attract new projects and promote economic growth in the region. Ennore alone will provide for the LNG demands in the Manali area as well as the States of Tamil Nadu and portions of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.
The Ennore terminal has been cleared for commissioning. Gunvor will provide the commissioning equipment, delivered by the Golar Snow vessel from Qatar. The project will support India’s goal to increase the county’s natural gas energy from 6.2% to 15% by 2030.
