The Nisg̱a’a Nation in British Columbia has reiterated its support for LNG development projects in the Canadian province. The First Nation is one of several Indigenous communities in British Columbia to express this position. The Nisga’a Nation said its decision to support LNG development was made after a rigorous environmental assessment and consultation process.
The Lax K’walaams, Metlakatla and Haisla Nations have joined the Nisga’a Nation to form the First Nation Climate Initiative (FNCI). “Our objective in forming FNCI is to work with Indigenous nations, governments, industry and environmental organizations to create a regulatory and policy platform that will enable us to achieve the goal of economic self-sufficiency through the responsible development of LNG projects in a manner that is consistent with our rights, principles and values, while meaningfully addressing climate change through the reduction of global greenhouse gas emissions,” says the statement from The Nisga’a Lisims Government issued on February 27.
The Nisga’a Nation leaders have urged all other Indigenous nations to support the Coastal Gas Link project as they believe it will bring significant economic opportunities to their people, as well as to other Canadians.
