PGNiG hit a cumulative 5,000 liquified natural gas (LNG) tanker truck loadings this year at the President Lech Kaczyński Terminal in Świnoujście. In 2019 alone the terminal dispatched 1,144 tanker trucks, representing a 24% growth year-over-year.
PGNiG imports LNG from the US, Qatar and Norway, most of which feeds into the Polish distribution network. The LNG that does not go into the network is loaded onto tankers and driven to areas that are not served by the national pipeline network.
PGNiG customers are generally in the hospitality or food processing market, the LNG flowing through the President Lech Kaczyński Terminal primarily serves off-grid networks, like villages that are not supported by the existing national network.
PGNiG subsidiary, Polska Spółka Gazownictwa (PSG), supports four of these “islands”. One is in Mońki with the other three in Białystok Province.
Vice President of the PGNiG Management Board for Trade, Maciej Woźniak commented, “Natural gas is rapidly gaining in popularity in Poland. Tanker trucks are capable of delivering LNG to places where there is no transmission infrastructure or where the infrastructure is insufficient to meet local needs. Liquefied natural gas can accelerate rollout of the gas network in Poland.”
PSG aims to build the infrastructure to provide natural gas access to 90% of Poland’s population by 2022.
