Adriatic LNG has announced record results in 2019, noting the role it has played in the diversification of Italy’s natural gas supply.
An annual utilization rate of 95.6% was reported at the regasification terminal located off the Veneto coast. This is significantly higher than European average of about 50% and exceeds the 81% level reached in 2018. The number of LNG carriers received in 2019 was 88, compared to 77 in 2018. The terminal, with a maximum regasification capacity of 8 billion cubic meters (bcm) per year, supplied 7.6 bcm of natural gas to the national grid, an increase of 1.1 bcm compared to 2018 volumes.
The Italian energy sector registered a 2.3% increase in the volumes of gas consumption, reaching 73.8 bcm in 2019. To balance the decrease in domestic production, 70.6 bcm of natural gas were imported from abroad, with Adriatic LNG regasification terminal accounting for 10% of all imports.
Additionally, first tests were completed at the terminal to enable it to receive Q-Flex carriers with capacities of up to 217,000 cubic meters of LNG, improving the terminal’s competitiveness in the Italian energy system.
Lastly, Adriatic LNG was the only regasification terminal in Italy to offer a peak shaving service in the fourth quarter of 2019, providing higher security to the national gas system for the winter of 2019-20.
