Total has chartered its first two LNG-powered Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCCs). Under a time-chartering deal signed with Malaysian shipowner AET, the 300,000-ton-capacity vessels will be delivered in 2022.
Total Marine Fuels Global Solutions will supply the LNG to power the two VLCCs. The vessels will use the latest technologies to reduce their fuel consumption and take advantage of the lower greenhouse gas emissions offered by LNG.
Total senior vice president of shipping Luc Gillet said: “The use of LNG to fuel our chartered vessels is the illustration of our determination to reduce the carbon footprint of our activities. With this decision, we reaffirm today our positive contribution to a sustainable shipping industry and our commitment to extend the use of LNG as a clean marine fuel.”
