Wärtsilä group’s LNG propulsion and storage system will be included in four new vessels being built at the WuHu Shipyard in China. The short-sea cargo ships will ultimately be delivered to Dutch company Wijnne & Barends Chartering.
These ships will be the first of their kind. Due to the compact nature of short-sea cargo ships, Wärtsilä worked closely with the architect to find a way fit the LNGPac storage and supply system without cutting into cargo space.
Additionally, the ships will include Wärtsilä’s Opti Design, aligning the HP nozzle and propeller with the hull which allows for optimized propulsion.
Wijnne & Barends’ Technical Director, Ad Toonen noted that the company has aimed to reduce its environmental footprint and that the new ships will help meet that goal by reducing emissions.
Luuk Hijlkema, Account Manager, Sales, for Wärtsilä Marine commented, “Our recognised leadership in LNG technologies is again shown with this order. Wärtsilä’s expertise in delivering fully integrated systems, and our emphasis on partnering with customers and other stakeholders to develop the optimal solution can lead to state-of-the-art vessels, as is we have here.”
The equipment is scheduled for delivery at the end of 2020 with the first vessel is set for delivery in fall 2021.
